OMG, you poor thing!
What a miscarriage of justice it would be for the richest & most powerful institution the world has ever known to be forced to make amends for sex crimes against children & covering them up for decades. After moving sexual predators in your employ from one exploited hunting ground to the next unsuspecting one, destroying lives that might have been happily lived but for atrocities committed by so-called men of God, you think you should get a free pass. That is the definition of chutzpah.
Do you actually believe the Child Victims Act is unfair because the Catholic Church has gotten away with child sexual abuse for so long that the number of victims created during this time would overwhelm it? After all, it isn’t the church’s fault that so many children who were traumatized by sexual abuse decided to blow their only chance at finding justice by waiting until they felt strong enough to confront a world run by adults.
As much as I would relish seeing a tsunami of accountability sweep through the Catholic Church’s ruling classes, it’s not going to happen. Not one of the many states that have enacted a Child Victims Act with a “look back window” have had this experience. Their experience has been of survivors getting long overdue help and countless still-active sexual predators being exposed. Doesn’t the Archdiocese have insurance for just this purpose.
Cardinal Dolan, you are an intelligent man. Some would say even crafty. You have already proven yourself capable of mitigating similar tight spots in other dioceses around the country. You already know all these facts. The arguments you offer in opposition to the CVA insult our intelligence.
What is it that you are really so afraid would happen if New York State passed the Child Victims Act?
